Mice are the mainstay of autism research. However, some researchers, including Drs. Rodney Samaco and Surabi Veeraraghavan of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute and Baylor College of Medicine, argue in a lay article that rats are not merely "larger mice". Rats have distinct behaviors that mimic human behaviors more closely and therefore, rat models would be a valuable addition to an autism researcher's toolkit.
This article, titled, "Meet the newest contestant in the scientific rat race" was first published in the Spectrum, a leading source of news and expert opinion on autism and republished in The Atlantic.
