
World-class scientists enter key leadership roles at the Duncan Neurological Research Institute
With the support of generous families and foundations, the Duncan Neurological Research Institute has become a premier neurodegenerative disease research enterprise capable of consistently generating groundbreaking discovery at an unparalleled pace. With so much advancement and innovation has come expansion into the study of adult conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, as well as numerous additions to its team of faculty, trainees and staff. To help lead so many talented researchers in such a broad range of research efforts, the Duncan NRI has recently enlisted some of the nation’s best and brightest physicians and scientists with international reputations for research excellence and leadership who will help direct the Duncan NRI team and ensure that their transformational work continues.

Dr. Joshua Shulman has been named the new Co-Director of the Duncan NRI at Texas Children’s Hospital. He also holds the Huffington Foundation Endowed Chair and is a Professor in the departments of Neurology, Neuroscience and Molecular and Human Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine. Shulman succeeds Dr. John Swann as co-director and brings with him 25 years of experience as a neuroscientist and adult neurologist specializing in Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative disorders.

Dr. Zhandong Liu has been named the inaugural Chief of Computational Science at Texas Children’s Hospital. He holds the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Endowed Chair and is an Associate Professor in the departments of Pediatrics and Neurology at Baylor College of Medicine and, Liu brings with him more than 15 years of experience in developing bioinformatics approaches for analyzing high-throughput biological data produced by gene expression arrays and RNA and genomic sequencing.

Dr. Sameer Sheth has been named the new Director of the Gordon and Mary Cain Pediatric Neurology Research Foundation Laboratories within the Duncan NRI at Texas Children’s Hospital. He also holds the Cullen Foundation Endowed Chair, is a McNair scholar and a Professor in the department of Neurosurgery at Baylor College of Medicine. Sheth succeeds Dr. John Swann as the director of the Cain Foundation Laboratories and brings with him 17 years of experience as a neuroscientist and adult neurosurgeon specializing in the treatment of patients with epilepsy, psychiatric disorders and movement disorders.
